How genre sets expectations, how to read ratings properly, and choosing between cinema and streaming.
Genre is less a filing system than a contract with the audience. Thrillers promise escalation and release, comedies promise rhythm and reversal, drama promises change in a person. Strong films either honour that promise precisely or break it deliberately to produce a new feeling β which is why 'the genre was not for me' is often separate from whether a film is good.
A rating looks like one number but hides a distribution. A 7.0 clustered between 6 and 8 is a very different film from a 7.0 split between 4s and 10s. The second is polarising β and if it matches your taste it may become a favourite. Scores right after release also skew high, because the most enthusiastic audience votes first.
How you watch changes what you get. Films built on scale and sound design deliver their intended effect in a theatre, while dialogue-driven, character-led films lose very little at home. Premium formats change aspect ratio and sound channel layout enough that the same film can read differently.
More options make choosing harder, not easier. Narrowing to three or four candidates and then picking at random tends to produce higher satisfaction than deliberating β time spent deciding does not buy a proportionally better evening.
